The Single Most Effective Thing To Do To Overcome Insecurities About Singing In Front Of Other People
Do you have stage fright?
Do you get nervous before singing performances, whether it's singing in front of a couple of people or a couple of hundred people?
I get it. I used to be very nervous about performing and I could spend days in advance agonizing about the upcoming performance.
However, there is a very good and effective way to overcome this kind of anxiety about being on stage and singing in front of people, and I’m going to reveal what it is to you in just a moment!
But before that, let’s just quickly address the elephant in the room: is all nervousness bad before a performance?
Well, no it’s not. A little bit of nervousness, or excitement (if you can frame it like that) can be very good for you! It lets you know you’re doing something important and you care about how it goes. The adrenaline also helps you focus more.
So being nervous before a performance is not all bad. But too much of it can kill an otherwise good performance and even if all goes well, you might not enjoy it all as much as you could, if you were just a little bit more chill about the whole thing.
So, how can you be more chill about the whole thing, you might ask.
What I’ve come to notice from my own experience and from the experiences of many of my students, is that nerves tend to come from NOT KNOWING what to do on stage.
So the key factor to a good performance with less anxiety about it is…
… PREPARATION.
Think about this.
If you’re unsure of:
How the songs go
What technique to use in what parts of the songs
How to style them in your own way and not sound like you’re imitating someone else
What to say in between the songs
How to use a microphone
How the sound system works…
… It’s very difficult to be relaxed if you’re thinking about all this, right?!
Now, imagine this:
You know exactly:
How your songs go: the melodies, the lyrics, the structure, the style - all of it!
What technique and what stylistic elements you want to use and where
What to say in between your songs
How to use a microphone and a sound system…
… Wouldn’t you feel more relaxed about it?
I know I would!
Of course, there are always things that can go wrong however well you prepare in advance and yes, something unexpected can (and often will) happen.
You can’t control everything. But you can control a lot of things.
What can you control?
Focus on improving what you can. Take care of your voice, train it with the help of a good vocal coach, know your songs inside and out, plan your in-between stage speeches, rehearse singing with a mic and different sound systems, and keep singing even if the sound goes off, you mess up or whatever. Because the most important thing is not to ever mess up, but learning how to handle those types of situations.
And the better you prepare, the less you mess up…
And lastly, when you’ve prepared well and it’s finally time to take the stage, be sure to ENJOY it! Have fun!
If you have fun and you enjoy it, so will your audience!
